While we are fortunate in Hawaii to have identified positive cases of COVID-19 early and reacted quickly, it’s important to remember that a greater number of people may have come in contact with the coronavirus.
Because of this, it is highly recommended to practice social distancing at this time in an effort to help minimize the risk of spreading. Internet Consultations and Your Security: Please Read Before Scheduling an Internet Consult
Please note that while we take every measure to ensure your privacy in our practice, the use of any electronic communication system carries risks. Using the Internet for your consultation is for your convenience only, and by using them you assume the risk of unauthorized use.
Federal law prohibits healthcare practices from communicating with patients via platforms that are not considered secure. What is meant by “insecure”? It could be the transmission of data is not encrypted. Or the information may not be stored in encrypted format. Or it may be that the platform has merely chosen not to sign a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement. The latter applies to Facetime and Skype.
However, many patients still find it convenient to communicate with our office using platforms, such as Facetime and Skype. Those modes of communication are generally not considered “secure” because the sponsoring platforms have not signed a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement with doctors. But they are transmitted using strong encryption. Some patients appreciate the tradeoff between ease of use/convenience and security. We want to accommodate your preferences. If you would like to communicate with us by Facetime and Skype, you will need to provide written authorization prior to setting up the consultation. By providing your authorization and communicating over these internet platforms, you are accepting the risk to your personal information and accept that if messages are sent through such channels, they may no longer be protected by HIPAA.
We will keep your preferences in force with no current expiration date until we learn otherwise. You can change your mind at any point down the road by updating your preferences in writing. Finally, whether or not you decide to use Facetime and Skype, your choice will have no impact on our decision to treat you. We are here for you.
